ENGLISH - THE COMMON MAN'S LANGUAGE

English has become one of the most common languages in the world as everybody understands some English nowadays. It can truly be regarded as the common man's language because there is no inbuilt provision for any kind of discrimination on the basis of age, class etc. In Indian languages for YOU we have different terms depending on what kind of person you are addressing. Like in Hindi we have AAP, TUM, TU etc. AAP is for higher classes; TUM is for medium class; TU is for the lowest. Similarly for SIT we have BAITIYE, BAITO, BAIT again in the same order of respect ie., for high class,medium and low.

In this exercise a student behaves as a tourist and another student acts like a native of a place and tries to teach the tourist a few useful langauge expressions for: asking a lift/getting to a place etc.

A SPEECH FOR THE OCCASION

In this exercise asked the students to plan and perform a role play where they have to show a context from history/movie/real life/book/drama/fiction where a person rises to the occasion and gives a speech which becomes a game changer /a harbinger of change for eg., the speech of Gandhi in South Africa against the new law of fingerprinting citizens of Indian origin. Some of the context recreated by the students were:
Sachin's farewell speech
Netaji's famous speech
Vivekananda's speech

NOUGHTS AND CROSSES EXERCISE

In this exercise first told the students about the Noughts and crosses game and then showed them a video clip of the famous Steve Jobs speech where he speaks about "Connecting the dots" and ends by the slogan "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish". 
After this asked the students to share a few life experiences where they also felt that in life incidents happen because they lead us to better and purposeful experiences in future which may not appeal to our reason seeking mind when we first happen to go through them.

EC PUBLIC OPINION

In this exercise, opinions are sought from participants on social issues.
Some relevant issues are as follows:

Should the government of the land sell liquor/lotteries?
(AGAINST: Selling liquor and lotteries by the govt. is like state encouraging drinking and gambling.)
(IN SUPPORT: Selling liquor and lotteries by the govt. is to make them more people friendly and also getting revenues to pay pensions/salaries etc.)
